How to choose the right plug & waste for your basin

How to choose the right plug & waste
 for your basin

If your basin does not include or come recommended with a manufacturer’s matching plug & waste, trying to select one yourself can feel like wading in murky sea water. We understand that it looks like there are endless choices available for basin plug & wastes but once you start understanding the differences and eliminating what doesn’t suit, the water will become a lot clearer.

Step One

Decide what kind of function you would like. Basin plug & wastes are available as pop-up, pop-down or a basic waste with a rubber or plastic plug.

Pop-down wastes offer the best functionality. They are open in the level position and you push down to seal them. This means they are aesthetically less intrusive and prevent small items (like jewelry) from slipping down into the trap. The mechanism is fully removable so offers easy maintenance and cleaning. The downside is that they are only available in limited finishes and are more expensive (though the benefits are worth it) than the pop-up wastes or basic wastes.

Pop-up wastes are the most common, available in an abundant array of styles, colours, materials and price points. They can be difficult to keep clean as the trap-way and pop-up mechanism can collect hair and grime. Fully removable baskets are available and these are recommended for ease of maintenance and cleaning (check our filter under functions for fully removable baskets).

Basic wastes are the most economical solution however colour choices are very limited and often the plug provided does not offer a great seal.

Use our functions filter to selection which function you would like.

Step Two

Identify whether your basin includes an overflow. Overflows are small holes in the wall of the basin that connect to the waste via a channel, which prevents the basin from overflowing. If you don’t have a floor waste in your bathroom it is strongly recommended that you purchase a basin with an overflow.

If the basin you are recommending includes an overflow you must ensure that the plug & waste that you purchase is compatible with overflows.

Use our filters to select basin wastes that are compatible with overflows.

Step Three

(you may need to ask your plumber about this one) identify what size connection your basin trap or bottle trap has. If you are installing new pipework this may not matter but best to check-in with your plumber in case they prefer to use a particular size. In Australia, this is most commonly either a 32mm (G1¼) or 40mm (G1½) connection. This measurement needs to match that of the waste you are purchasing.

Use our filters to select your compatible thread size.

Step Four

Now you have done the hard work, you can select the colour you prefer, either to match the basin - or to match your tapware. If matching tapware we recommend selecting the same brand waste as your tapware brand.

Use our filters to select by brand or colour.

If you are unsure about any of these steps we recommend that you consult with your plumber.
