Our home was neither aesthetically pleasing or practical. We had a lot of wasted space and nothing but thoughtless square edges in every room. To counter this, we wanted to introduce curves at every opportunity we had. We did this by choosing pill shaped counter top basins by Nood Co, round tapware by Caroma, a 1200mm vanity with round edges by ADP and a beautiful freestanding curved bathtub also by Caroma. These little decisions all added up to achieve the desired effect we were after, softening the room and inviting guests inside. The other focus for us was neutral colours. We love spending our time outdoors and in particular at the rolling sand dunes that over look the Tasman sea across the road. 1 - Consult all your trades BEFORE you start designing. It’s disappointing to put so much time and effort into a set of ideas that aren’t achievable for whatever reason. Speaking to your plumber, electrician, tiler and carpenter before hand will not only save you time and money, they may even offer up some brilliant ideas to make the space one to envy.

2 - Order everything in advance. Some high quality products take time to make. We placed our orders 16weeks before demo and some items only just made it in time. Your trades will need to see the items just after the demolition stage to “rough in” your products. There's nothing worse than having a hole in your house because you didn’t order in time!

3 - Use lighting as a feature and not a utility. Remember, this is a space for peace and quiet in your home, it’s not your office. You’ll see a lot of well lit bathrooms with 3-4 bright downlights in the ceiling that remind you more of your dentists operating room than your home. Instead - think about hidden LED strip lighting under your vanity, behind your bath or in a shower niche. Look for a dim wall sconce that will serve as the perfect mood lighting for a relaxing bath. And also have the ability to light up the room well for those mornings when you need a wake up or to do your make up. Ask your sparky to give you options at the switch for different moods.
