7 Steps to Designing Your Perfect Bathroom

7 Steps for Designing the Perfect Bathroom

Are you renovating a bathroom? This is a must-read with all the tips and tricks from Rebeka Morgan at BuildHer Collective in collaboration with The Blue Space!

Designing a bathroom can be exciting, but let’s face it – it can also feel overwhelming without a solid plan in place. Whether you’re after a tranquil, spa-like escape or a chic, family-friendly bathroom, these 7 steps will help you create a space that’s not only beautiful but also super practical.

With our project at Carrajung Estate, we went for a mix of elegance and functionality, using products from The Blue Space. Here’s how you can bring your bathroom dream to life too!

1. Room Dimensions

First things first, grab your tape measure! You’ll want to map out the exact length and width of your space, marking where fixtures and fittings will go. Doing this to scale is essential – it helps you understand how everything will fit together without any nasty surprises later on. Not sure about product sizes? The Blue Space has plenty of info to guide you.
For inspiration, check out the layout plan we used for the bathroom at Carrajung Estate. Starting with the right measurements ensures your layout will work seamlessly.

2. Find Your Inspiration

Now, here’s the fun part – finding your inspiration! We recommend choosing three images that really capture your design style. Doing this helps you spot patterns and preferences that will guide the rest of your choices.
Once you’ve settled on your theme, you’ll start to see how everything falls into place.

3. Create a Moodboard

Moodboards are a brilliant way to visualise how your bathroom will come together. Use a tool like Style Source Book to layer tiles, fittings, and colours so you can see how different elements interact before you commit.
Check out the moodboard we created for the Carrajung Estate bathroom using products from The Blue Space. It really helped us nail down the look and feel before we started ordering.

4. Order Samples

Never skip the samples! Seeing products online is great, but lighting and space can drastically change how materials look in real life. Whether it’s tiles, paint, or even tapware, order samples and check them out in your space. This way, you’ll know everything works together before making the final call.

5. Draw Each Elevation

Here’s where you get into the nitty-gritty. Draw out each wall and think about the placement of key features like taps, mirrors, and tiles. Consider feature walls and clean lines – it’s the details that make all the difference. You can easily find product dimensions online, which will help you plan it all out.

For the Carrajung Estate bathroom, we selected some standout products, including:
Freestanding Fienza Keeto Back-to-Wall Acrylic Bath, Meir Shadow Rain Shower Rose, Meir Shadow Taps, Meir Gunmetal Kitchen Sinks,
Palm Cove Grey Gloss Crackle Porcelain Mosaic Tiles

6. Check Storage and Lighting

Don’t overlook storage and lighting! Make sure you’ve got enough space for all your bathroom essentials and think about where power points will go for items like your toothbrush and hairdryer. Lighting is crucial – task lighting over mirrors is a must, but ambient lighting can really set the mood for a relaxing space.

The more detail you put into planning now, the better your result will be!

7. Work Out Product Quantities

It’s time to figure out how much of everything you need. For tiles, it’s a good idea to order about 20% extra to cover any wastage or mistakes. Simply multiply the length by the width of your room, then add that extra 20% – better to have a little left over than come up short.
